Memory Care

Memory Care
In a memory care facility it is essential to take into consideration all the aspects of a residents
room to make them as comfortable as possible. It has been shown that lighting, materials, familiarity and art are very important for the occupant; all of these will be focus elements in the design. Studies have shown that baby boomers prefer aging in place, maintaining their independence. Keeping this in mind, the design will result in a homey, inviting, and familiar space that connects both with family and neighbors to create a sense of community.
This design focuses on creating a safe place to age, specifically with those with dementia.
The design includes....
• Natural lighting - very important to memory care to prevent an effect called sundowning which causes irritation and confusion in dementia patients. This can be prevented by the use of natural light in the day time and black out curtains to block out light pollution during the nighttime. These combinations help with allowing dementia patients to know what time of day it is and prevent confusion.
• Anti-Slip Materials - to prevent falls and injuries
• Simple and light wall materials - for less confusion and a light and airy space
• Acoustic panels - to block out sound pollution that may cause confusion
